When Is The Best Time To Buy A Caravan?

If you’re considering purchasing a caravan, then there are a lot of things you will want to consider. First and foremost you’ll need to look at your finances and work out your budget. This will help you determine whether you’ll be purchasing a new or used caravan. Then, once you know this, you’ll want to decide how big your caravan will be and what features and fixtures you require.

Once you have your plan sorted and you are aware of the type of caravan you need, you might just want to stop and have a think about when you want to make your purchase. Firstly, do you need the caravan right away, or are you able to hang on a bit and buy the model at a time when it might be cheaper or when there might be a wide array of models to choose from?

In today’s blog post, we’re taking a look at what time of year is best to buy a caravan. So have a read and see if any of this information is helpful for you.

Best time of year to buy a new caravan

If you are looking to buy a brand new caravan, then there are a few things that you will want to consider when deciding on what time of year to make your purchase.

First and foremost, you need to decide if you’re looking to get your hands on one of the latest models. Because if this is the case, then your decision on when to buy will be driven by availability of caravans, rather than cost.

Getting the latest model

If you want to get your hands on the newest model, then you will most likely want to look to buy your new caravan around August and September. This means you’ll be getting in there right when all of the top manufacturers are releasing their newest models.

The earlier you manage to make your purchase, the greater your chances are that you’ll actually get hold of your new model in time for the Easter break!

If you’re looking for a good deal

If a good deal is what you’re after, then there are a few times throughout the year that you may wish to consider.

Firstly, give some thought to heading to one of the Caravan Shows at the Birmingham NEC. These shows offer you the chance to speak to a number of salespeople from a variety of dealerships and manufacturers, allowing you to see a range of brand new models up close and personal! Not only does this help you see a wide variety of options in one hit, but it’s also a great time to get a good deal as a number of dealers and manufacturers offer great discounts at these shows. In terms of dates, the first NEC show of the year is usually in February, with the next one coming in October.

Another thing to consider when looking for a good deal, is buying a brand new caravan towards the end of the season. This is because dealerships will often start to drop their prices in order to sell their models before the new models arrive on the forecourt.

You’ll tend to see prices start to drop from August onwards, with even better deals available during November and December.

By waiting until autumn to buy your new caravan, you’ll also give yourself plenty of time to shop around and find the right model for your specific needs. When the sun is shining down in the midst of summer, it can be tempting to make a snap decision when the lure of a caravan holiday is too much to bear. Whereas if you wait until the wetter months arrive, you’ll be less influenced by your innate desire to hit the road, and be able to make better judgments and choose the perfect caravan for you. And if all goes well, you can be ready to head out on your caravan adventure when spring rolls around!

Best time of year to buy a used caravan

If it’s a used caravan you’re after, then there are some different things that may impact when you want to make your purchase.

Firstly, it’s worth knowing that most people tend to buy used caravans between March and August. However, buying during this popular time doesn’t mean that you’ll get the best price. There’s a reason summer holidays are more expensive than off-season breaks, and the same applies to caravans - it’s all about demand.

There are a few times of year where we would recommend buying a used caravan depending on where and who you intend to buy from.

Buying from a private seller

Firstly, if you’re buying directly from a private seller, you should consider taking a look in early spring. This is a good time of year, because caravan owners may be looking to sell their caravan in time to purchase a new one for the start of the new season. However, one thing to consider is that demand can be high during spring, which may also affect price.

That’s why you may wish to go a bit earlier and start shopping in late autumn or winter. This is when demand is lower, meaning any private sellers may be more willing to negotiate on price.

Buying from a used caravan dealership

If you’re buying a used caravan from a dealership, you may wish to aim to do so from January to March. This is because dealers may be looking to clear any second-hand stock that they have on their forecourt in time for the newer models to arrive.

That means that a dealer may well be more willing to budge on price during that period. It’s also worth noting that second-hand caravans can be more expensive during the late spring, as it’s such a popular period for buying in time for the summer season.

Things to consider when buying a caravan

When purchasing a caravan, there are several important factors to weigh to ensure you get the right model for your needs and avoid unexpected costs and issues. Here’s a breakdown of key considerations:

Can your car tow a Caravan?

First up you need to consider whether your car is capable of towing a caravan. This involves checking the following things:

  • Check your car's curb weight: Look in your car handbook for the 'curb weight,' which is the vehicle's weight without any cargo but with a full tank of fuel.
  • Calculate the 85% rule: Multiply your car's curb weight by 0.85 to get the safe towing weight recommendation. For beginners, it’s safest to keep the caravan's weight at or below this 85% figure.
  • Confirm the caravan’s MTPLM: Ensure the caravan’s Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM) is within the safe towing capacity of your car. While you can legally tow up to 100% of the curb weight, it’s generally discouraged for a smooth and secure experience, especially if you’re new to towing.

Choosing new vs. used caravans

Next you’ll need to decide whether you want to purchase a new or a used model. Below are some of the advantages of each.

Advantages of buying a new caravan:

  • Latest features and technology: New caravans come with the most recent designs, advanced safety features, and modern amenities, offering a comfortable and high-tech living experience.
  • Warranty protection: Manufacturers’ warranties on new caravans cover repairs and replacements, giving peace of mind and saving on potential costs for several years.
  • Minimal maintenance needs: With no prior wear and tear, new caravans typically require less immediate maintenance, reducing upkeep costs and hassle.
  • Customisation options: Buying new often allows for customisations, such as choosing interior layouts, colours, and add-on features tailored to your preferences.

Advantages of buying a used caravan:

  • Lower purchase price: Used caravans are generally much more affordable than new ones, making it easier to find a model that fits your budget.
  • Reduced depreciation: The steepest depreciation usually occurs in the first few years, so used caravans lose value more slowly, retaining resale value better overtime.
  • Wide range of choices: With a larger pool of pre-owned models, there’s a greater selection in various styles, layouts, and price points, offering flexibility for buyers.
  • Immediate availability: Used caravans are often readily available, whereas newmodels might have long wait times due to high demand or production delays.
  • Upgraded with previous owner’s add-ons: Many used caravans come with extras added by the previous owner, like awnings, solar panels, or upgraded fixtures, offering extra value at no additional cost.

Inspecting a used caravan

If you do decide to buy a used caravan, then you’ll want to make sure you carry out the appropriate checks before making your purchase! These include:

  • Tyres: Check tyres for signs of damage like cracks, flat spots, or scuffs. Tyres over five years old may need replacing, particularly on twin-axle models, which can be expensive.
  • Service history: Review the caravan’s service records. Consistent maintenance can indicate a well-cared-for vehicle and reduce the risk of unexpected repairs.
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): Check that the VIN is registered in the Caravan Registration & Identification Scheme (CRiS) database for caravans made after 1992 to ensure it’s not stolen.
  • Windows and locks: Inspect window catches and locks to confirm they work properly; faulty locks can invalidate insurance.

Storage options for your caravan

You’ll also want to make sure that you have adequate space to store your caravan when it’s not in use. Here are some things you may wish to consider:

  • Home storage: Some people have space to park their caravan on their driveway or in a garage, which can be convenient but may raise security concerns.
  • Seasonal pitching: This involves leaving your caravan on a campsite for a designated season and can save the hassle of frequent transportation.
  • Storage facilities: Paid storage sites offer secure, dedicated spaces, especially beneficial if home storage isn’t an option.
  • Alternative locations: With permission, storing it on a private property, like a farmer's field, may be cheaper but often lacks security.

Caravan Insurance

You will also want to ensure that your caravan is properly insured. Which means taking into consideration the following things:

  • Type of insurance: Different policies are required for motorhomes, touring, and static caravans. Make sure the policy you find fits your caravan type.
  • Coverage options: Consider add-ons like contents insurance or weather protection for awnings to protect against common risks.
  • Choose a specialist insurer: Look for an insurer with expertise in caravans, as they can offer tailored policies that address unique caravan risks effectively.

To conclude…

So, the best time to buy a new caravan depends on your priorities. If you want the latest models, aim to buy in August or September, when manufacturers release new lines, ensuring availability for spring travel. For deals on new caravans, visit caravan shows in February or October at venues like the Birmingham NEC, where discounts are common, or consider buying in autumn or winter, as dealerships reduce prices to clear stock. This approach also avoids impulsive summer purchases, allowing thoughtful decisions for spring adventures.

For used caravans, timing varies by source. Buying from private sellers in late autumn or winter offers lower demand and better negotiation opportunities, though early spring is also popular as sellers prepare for the new season. For dealership purchases, January to March is ideal, as dealers clear used inventory ahead of new arrivals. Avoid late spring, as higher demand inflates prices.

We have used Chipping Sodbury Caravans many times. I cannot comment on the caravan and motorhome sale or servicing side of their business as we have only used for accessories and gas but have always found what we needed, great prices for a physical shop and the staff always helpful and knowledgeable. Can’t fault our experiences.
